(Update, July 11) – Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo has announced the appointment of Dr. Michael Mendoza to the position of Public Health Commissioner.
Dr. Mendoza has served as Interim Commissioner of Public Health since April.
“As Interim Commissioner of Public Health, Dr. Mendoza demonstrated his extensive expertise in the medical field, and quickly became an invaluable member of my administration,” Dinolfo stated. “Dr. Mendoza is highly qualified, and I am confident in his ability to lead our great team in the Health Department as our full-time commissioner.”
Dinolfo also said she will introduce a new law to amend the county charter, which will authorize Mendoza to continue maintaining clinical hours as commissioner.
The legislature will vote on the new law in September, following a public hearing on the matter next month, and Mendoza’s confirmation will likely become final in January, according to the county.
(From April) – Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo has announced the appointment of Dr. Michael Mendoza to the position of interim commissioner of public health.
The Monroe County Legislature authorized a contract with University of Rochester Medical Center for Dr. Mendoza’s services on Tuesday, April 12.
Mendoza will continue his role as medical director at Highland Family Medicine, and as an associate professor in the Departments of Family Medicine, Public Health Sciences, and Nursing at the University of Rochester Medical Center, in addition to his new position.
“With extensive experience and expertise in the medical field, and a thorough educational background, Dr. Mendoza is highly qualified and duly prepared to serve Monroe County as interim commissioner of public health,” Dinolfo stated. “As a recognized educator and writer with numerous publications, we welcome Dr. Mendoza to our great team at the Monroe County Public Health Department.”
Mendoza received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, a Master of Public Health from the University of Illinois, Chicago School of Public Health, and a Master of Science of Business Administration from the University of Rochester, Simon Graduate School of Business.
He has also served as the medical director of Highland Family Medicine since 2009, and before joining the University of Rochester; Mendoza served as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Chicago, consulting with patients as a National Health Service Corps scholar.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead a great health department with so much potential here in Monroe County,” Mendoza stated. “Under the strong leadership of county executive Cheryl Dinolfo, we can continue the great programs and services the county has to offer the community. ”
In addition, Frank Golisano has been named the associate director of public health for the health department.
Golisano has been with the Monroe County Health Department since 2011, and has also served as the health business operations manager and deputy registrar of vital records. He’s worked in the healthcare industry for over 20 years.
“The public’s health will be in good hands with the selection of Dr. Michael Mendoza as the next interim health commissioner,” former interim commissioner of public health, and current EMS medical director Dr. Jeremy Cushman stated. “Together with Mr. Golisano, with whom I’ve worked closely with over the past year, and other key staff, the health department will stand ready to effectively respond to any significant health issue that may arise.”
According to officials, Mendoza will assume his new role Monday, April 18.
