Rochester NY March for Science Announces Local Events to
Coincide with International Call to Defend, Support, and Celebrate Science
On Saturday, April 14, 2018 the Rochester NY March for Science invites the public to gather at Martin Luther King Jr. Park at Manhattan Square Park at 12pm, for a Rally beginning a Day of Science calling for equitable, evidence-based policies that serve all people in the communities in and around Rochester.
The April 14, 2018 Day of Science is three-fold event: a Rally, a March, and an Exposition. The Rally calls on elected officials to recognize the important role of science in public-policy and will highlight the need for science and public policy to serve underrepresented communities in our area, our country, and all over the world as well as the role of well-funded, well-communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity. Confirmed speakers at the Rally include Dr. Wendi Heinzelman, Dean of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Rochester, Councilman Adam McFadden, Brighton Town Supervisor Bill Moehle, Assemblyman Harry Bronson, Mayor Lovely Warren, and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter.
After the Rally, the participants will march through the streets of Rochester to the Rochester Science Expo and Career Fair at the Rochester Riverside Hotel. The March serves as a physical and symbolic show of the movement toward a future where science serves all. The march will demonstrate our community’s support of scientific influence on public policy and be a catalyst to challenge the recent uprising of anti-science rhetoric. Marchers will show support for publicly funded science, technology, and research upon which the future of our communities depends on. The half-mile march begins at the corner of Chestnut Street and Court Street and will head west on Court Street, north on Clinton Square, and west on East Main Street to the Rochester Riverside Hotel at 120 East Main Street.
The Rochester Science Expo and Career Fair, hosted by the Rochester NY March for Science, runs from 1pm until 5pm at the Rochester Riverside Hotel. This event will highlight the wonderful things that science has done and continues to do for the Rochester area. There will be demonstrations, exhibits, and talks for all ages as well as scientific experiences focusing on science education, careers in science, the value of science, and the future of science. All in attendance are guaranteed to learn something new about science in Rochester.
