Attorney General Extends Deadline for Uber, Lyft Drivers to Claim $328 Million Settlement Funds
New York Attorney General Letitia James is calling on Uber and Lyft drivers who believe they were underpaid to file claims for their share of a $328 million settlement. The deadline to file has been extended to 11:59 p.m. on January 31, 2025.
The settlement follows an investigation by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), which uncovered that Uber and Lyft improperly withheld funds from drivers and failed to provide legally mandated benefits.
“Rideshare drivers are the backbone of New York’s transportation network and deserve fair compensation for their hard work,” said Attorney General James. “This settlement is a victory for drivers, and I urge anyone eligible to file a claim before the deadline to ensure they receive what they’re owed.”
Settlement Details
Total Settlement Amount: $328 million
$290 million from Uber
$38 million from Lyft
Eligibility:
Uber drivers who worked between 2014 and 2017
Lyft drivers who worked between 2015 and 2017
Funds are being distributed to current and former drivers. Drivers who haven’t yet filed a claim—or who filed without confirmation—should do so immediately.
Key Findings from the Investigation
Improper Deductions: Between 2014 and 2017, Uber deducted sales taxes and Black Car Fund fees from driver earnings, despite these costs being passenger responsibilities. Lyft imposed similar “administrative charges” from 2015 to 2017.
Lack of Benefits: Both companies failed to provide paid sick leave as required by New York City and state laws.
As part of the settlement, both companies are implementing significant changes to improve driver pay and working conditions:
Minimum Earnings Floor: Drivers outside New York City now earn at least $26 per hour, adjusted annually for inflation.
Paid Sick Leave: Drivers accrue one hour of sick pay for every 30 hours worked, up to 56 hours annually.
Transparency:
Clear hiring and earnings statements
Ride payment notifications after each trip
Enhanced in-app support in multiple languages
Deactivation Appeals: Drivers now have the right to appeal platform deactivations
Over 100,000 drivers are eligible to file claims, and more than 88,000 claims have already been submitted as of December 18, 2024. To file a claim or get assistance, use the following resources:
