Evans Launches Reelection Campaign as Sinha Enters Rochester Mayor's Race
Mayor Malik Evans officially announced his bid for reelection Friday, setting up a 2025 mayoral race that will include at least one challenger: Shashi Sinha, a local technology director promising an “outsider perspective.”
Evans, elected in 2021, launched his campaign at a community event, emphasizing efforts to improve public safety, combat gun violence, and spur economic growth. He highlighted first-term achievements, including expanded youth programs and increased community engagement.
“It has been an honor to serve as Rochester’s mayor over the last three-plus years,” Evans said. “While we have come a long way since 2021, our work is not done. I am looking forward to finishing the historic work we have started.”
Sinha, who announced his candidacy earlier in the week, described himself as a political newcomer focused on bold policies and innovative solutions. He cited plans for neighborhood revitalization and tackling inequality by leveraging his background in education and technology.
“I’m running for mayor to ensure that everyone in Rochester has the chance to pursue their own American Dream,” Sinha said. “I believe in a city where opportunity is accessible to everyone, where neighborhoods are safe, and where our local government truly listens and responds to the needs of its people.”
Both campaigns are gaining attention from voters seeking a leader who can build on progress while offering fresh perspectives. Evans, touting a record of collaboration and economic development, welcomed the competition, calling it essential for a robust democratic process.
“As candidates, we owe it to our residents to present clear visions for the future,” Evans said.
Both candidates will run on the Democratic line, with a primary election set for June 24. The general election will take place on Nov. 4.
Both campaigns are expected to intensify their public outreach, fundraisers, and volunteer efforts in the months ahead as voters weigh whether to give Evans a second term or turn to a challenger promising transformative change.
