New York’s ‘You’re Hired’ Initiative Draws Over 1,300 Job Applicants in First Three Weeks

New York’s “You’re Hired” initiative, launched to support displaced federal workers, has received more than 1,300 applications within three weeks, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday. The program seeks to fill over 7,000 state government positions across diverse sectors, including healthcare, engineering, and legal services.
“New York values public servants,” Hochul stated. “We will continue to ensure that talented, experienced federal workers are aware of state workforce opportunities and the resources available to them.”
So far, state agencies have conducted over 100 interviews and extended 28 job offers. Additionally, more than 250 individuals have registered for career webinars or accessed online career support resources. The StateJobsNY website has seen a surge in traffic, with over 4 million views and approximately 1.2 million users—1 million of whom are new visitors, according to the governor’s office.
The initiative was launched in response to significant federal workforce reductions under the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk. These cuts have impacted multiple agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which announced plans to lay off 10,000 employees and reduce its workforce by 20,000 as part of a major restructuring. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is also considering plans to cut its 90,000-person workforce in half.
These federal layoffs have had widespread effects, with Washington, D.C., projected to lose approximately 18,900 jobs. Other cities, including Baltimore, Kansas City, San Antonio, Ogden, and Memphis, are also expected to experience significant job losses.
To counteract the impact, New York State is actively promoting the “You’re Hired” campaign through social media, email outreach, and direct engagement with affected workers. State agencies such as the Office of General Services, Department of Civil Service, and Office of Information Technology Services are among those actively hiring.
