With academic performance and student wellbeing under urgent scrutiny, Rochester City School Board President Camille Simmons is kicking off a new community-driven initiative aimed at tackling the district’s most pressing challenges.
Dubbed “Necessary Conversations,” the series invites Rochester residents to engage directly in shaping solutions for local schools. The first gathering is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. at First Genesis Baptist Church, and is open to all who care about the future of education in the Rochester City School District (RCSD).
Simmons, who assumed her role earlier this year, says the district is falling short in preparing students with essential skills in literacy, math, writing, and life readiness.
“Our children’s academic education is at risk,” said Simmons. “These students are the future leaders of Rochester, and we have a responsibility to ensure they receive the support and education they need to succeed.”
The conversations will focus on four key priorities Simmons believes are essential for progress in 2025:
Strengthening partnerships among schools, families, and the broader community.
Rethinking curriculum to inspire joyful, active learning.
Lifting staff morale to create a more supportive environment for teachers and students.
Improving School Board governance to better reflect and serve the community’s needs.
Simmons emphasizes that this event is just the beginning.
“This isn’t a one-time conversation,” she said. “It’s the start of a movement to bring real reform, driven by the people most impacted—our community. I need your voices, your ideas, and your commitment. Together, we can reimagine education for Rochester’s students.”
