Rosser's selection follows a nearly year-long search initiated after former Superintendent Carmine Peluso resigned in March 2024 to lead the Churchville-Chili Central School District. The RCSD has experienced frequent leadership changes, with eight different superintendents since 2011.

In a statement, Rosser expressed enthusiasm about joining the Rochester community, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between schools, families, and the community to provide high-quality educational experiences for all students.

“I am truly honored to serve as Superintendent of the Rochester City School District,” said Dr. Rosser. “Joining this incredible community is both humbling and exciting, and I look forward to collaborating with educators, staff, parents, students, and community members to expand opportunities for all students."

The Board of Education approved Rosser's appointment with a 4-2 vote, with Board President Camille Simmons advising Rosser to "walk softly and carry a big stick." Board members Beatriz LeBron and Isaiah Santiago opposed the appointment, citing concerns over the contract's financial terms.

Rosser will begin his tenure with an annual salary of $280,000, which is $50,000 more than Interim Superintendent Strickland's current contract. The agreement also includes provisions for consulting services between March 8 and June 30 to facilitate a smooth transition.

Rosser's career includes roles in Buffalo Public Schools, Atlanta Public Schools, and the District of Columbia's Office of the State Superintendent of Education. He is recognized for implementing transformative strategies and coaching educational leaders.

The Board of Education invites students, families, educators, and community members to welcome Rosser to Rochester as he prepares to lead the district in its mission to improve student outcomes and provide equitable educational opportunities.

The Rochester Board of Education has appointed Dr. Eric Jay Rosser as the new superintendent of the Rochester City School District (RCSD), effective July 1. Rosser, who currently leads the Poughkeepsie City School District, will succeed Interim Superintendent Demario Strickland, who has served since July 2024.
