RCSD Provides Emotional Support Resources After Student’s Passing

Writer: Audra KietaAudra Kieta

Following a heartbreaking incident at the School of the Arts, the Rochester City School District (RCSD) is offering emotional and mental health support to families across the district.

A student tragically passed away after falling from a rooftop, sparking grief and concern throughout the community. In response, Interim Superintendent Dr. Demario Strickland shared a heartfelt message, extending condolences and outlining available support services.

“I am deeply heartbroken by the loss our School of the Arts community is experiencing,” Strickland wrote. “Losing a young life is an unimaginable tragedy, and our thoughts are with the student’s family, friends, staff, and all those affected.”

To assist students, families, and staff during this difficult time, RCSD has ensured that each school has Social Workers and School Counselors available to provide personalized support and referrals for additional mental health care when needed.

Strickland highlighted the importance of open conversations about grief and emotional well-being. “We recognize that discussing loss—especially after such a tragedy—can be challenging,” he said. “To help families talk with their children about suicide and emotional health, we have compiled a list of resources.”

Families can access these mental health, behavioral, and emotional support materials by visiting bit.ly/3XCdypc.

“There is no greater loss than that of a child,” Strickland said. “I know our entire RCSD community stands together in offering our deepest condolences to the SOTA community.”

RCSD encourages everyone to support one another with compassion during this time of mourning.
