Rochester, Monroe County Seek Employers for Summer Youth Internships

Community Submission

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The City of Rochester and Monroe County are looking for local employers to partner in their summer internship programs for young people.

The Summer of Opportunity Program (SOOP) and the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), in collaboration with RochesterWorks, provide paid internships to local youth. These programs offer valuable work experience and career development opportunities.

“Every young person who wants a job should be able to get one, and our community partners make that possible,” said Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans. “Employers who join these programs give youth an early start in professional settings and help build their future careers.”

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello emphasized the benefits for both interns and employers. “These programs provide young people with hands-on experience, skill development, and mentorship,” he said. “At the same time, participating businesses get extra help during the summer while investing in our local workforce.”

RochesterWorks Executive Director Dave Seeley highlighted the impact on career readiness. “These internships introduce youth to potential career paths while ensuring they earn a good wage,” he said. “Employers play a crucial role by offering valuable training and experience.”

Each summer, SOOP and SYEP connect hundreds of young people with job opportunities across various industries, including government, nonprofits, and private businesses. Past employers have offered internships in fields such as advanced manufacturing, culinary arts, health care, hospitality, and multimedia production.

Interns work 20 hours per week and receive stipends funded by the City and County. Employers are responsible for providing structured, meaningful work experiences that introduce young people to professional environments and essential job skills.

Youth interested in participating should apply as soon as possible. The application period, which began on Feb. 1, will remain open until all slots are filled. To qualify, applicants must be enrolled in school or working toward a high school equivalency, such as a GED, and have a New York State work permit.
