Evoke: A Youthful Expression is now on display at the George Eastman Museum, showcasing the creativity and voices of nearly 40 young artists from the Rochester area. The exhibition, which currently runs through March 9, 2025, is presented in the museum's Gallery Obscura, a space dedicated to highlighting community-based projects.

This vibrant exhibition is a culmination of works created by students who participated in the In Control workshops, a program organized by Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York (PPCWNY).

The show features six series of multimedia projects, including:

  • Original clothing designs paired with photographs from fashion shows.

  • Portraits exploring personal transformation during the In Control program.

  • Original songs written and performed by the artists.

  • Video works highlighting themes of youth identity and empowerment.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with In Control to showcase the voices of young artists in our community,” said Amy Schelemanow, the museum’s director of exhibitions, publishing, and design. “Gallery Obscura aims to amplify regional youth creativity, and this multidisciplinary exhibition exemplifies the power of their messages and journeys.”

For more than 25 years, In Control has provided Rochester-area youth with education, mentorship, and hands-on creative experiences. The program offers workshops in photography, fashion, media, music, dance, and culinary arts while focusing on skills like decision-making, communication, and empowerment.

Open to teens from all backgrounds, the program promotes inclusivity and encourages participants to make informed decisions about their health and future while exploring their artistic potential.

Founded in 1947, the George Eastman Museum is the world’s oldest museum dedicated to photography and one of the largest film archives in the United States. Located on the historic Rochester estate of Kodak founder George Eastman, the museum is a destination for photography, film, and technology enthusiasts, offering an extensive collection and dynamic educational programs.

Gallery Obscura, the museum’s community-focused exhibition space, showcases work from local institutions, youth programs, and collaborative efforts to amplify voices from the Greater Rochester area.

The museum invites community members to submit exhibition proposals for Gallery Obscura. Proposals should include a project description and 6–10 sample images or links to media. Submissions can be emailed to GalleryObscura@eastman.org.
