Three Kings Day Celebration Highlights Latino Traditions in Rochester

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and Legislature President Yversha Román invite the community to celebrate Three Kings Day – A Gift of Health on Friday, Jan. 5, at the Roger Robach Community Center in Ontario Beach Park. The event runs from 2:30 to 7 p.m. and honors the rich cultural traditions of Latino communities, particularly those with ties to Puerto Rico.

Three Kings Day, known as the Christian holiday of the Epiphany, commemorates the journey of the three wise men to visit the infant Jesus. The holiday holds deep significance in many Latino cultures and is especially celebrated in Puerto Rican households, where traditions are passed down through generations.

The family-friendly celebration will feature:

• A screening of “Los Que Nos Une,” a film exploring how music unites Puerto Ricans at home and abroad.

• Children’s storytime highlighting the customs of Three Kings Day.

• Traditional shoebox decorating, an activity where children prepare shoeboxes with grass for the wise men’s camels, later exchanged for gifts.

• Live music and delicious food.

Monroe County’s Department of Public Health will also have informational tables with resources on early childhood development, lead poisoning prevention, and general health and wellness.

“Celebrating this important cultural holiday while providing health resources directly to our residents is a meaningful way to connect with the community,” said County Executive Bello. “We encourage families to join us for delicious food, lively music, and the chance to learn more about Latino traditions.”

Legislature President Román emphasized the event’s role in fostering unity and cultural appreciation. “Three Kings Day is a beautiful tradition that honors history, values, and heritage. This celebration brings people together to share joy while also focusing on the importance of health.”
