WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's proposal for the United States to take control of the Gaza Strip and relocate its Palestinian residents has sparked global criticism and divided reactions within his own party.

Speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Feb. 4, Trump suggested turning Gaza into a thriving region, calling it the “Riviera of the Middle East.” His plan would involve moving nearly 2 million Palestinians to neighboring countries like Egypt and Jordan. Both nations have firmly rejected the idea, citing concerns over forced displacement.

International Backlash

Criticism from world leaders was swift. Saudi Arabia reiterated its commitment to a two-state solution and stressed Palestinian rights. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the plan as a “serious violation of international law,” while Hamas called it a “recipe for chaos” that could further destabilize the region.

Mixed Reaction in the U.S.

The proposal has faced bipartisan pushback in Washington.

Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., called it “offensive and foolish,” while Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., warned of its harmful impact on Palestinian families.

Even some Republicans voiced skepticism. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said, “I think most South Carolinians would not be excited about sending Americans to take over Gaza.” Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., dismissed the plan, saying, “We have no business contemplating yet another occupation to doom our treasure and spill our soldiers’ blood.”

Others were more supportive. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., suggested on social media that Gaza be transformed into a luxury destination, writing, “Let’s turn Gaza into Mar-a-Lago.” Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., backed the proposal, stating, “President Trump will never stop working to protect American interests.”

Uncertain Future

Many conservative think tanks and advocacy groups have remained silent on the plan, with some questioning its feasibility and cost.

The mixed response from Republican leaders highlights the challenges of forming a unified stance on U.S. policy in the Middle East. As the debate continues, it remains unclear whether Trump’s proposal will gain traction or fade amid the controversy.
